King's Garden

A pixel art platformer, using modern graphic techniques. This is very early in development, and was recently merged with The Eternal Abyss (One of my other projects, I didn't have time to work on both).

This version added one way platformers, however they are only used twice in this version. (Two of the ladders have them ).

More leves, enemies, integration of storyline, and more tilesets.

Game Graphics Mechanics
Downloaded, straight away saw SDL2.dll in the file list. Having coded with this library I know the hell.

The executable starts up, and I see a console and a frame filled a blue colour. Music is pretty cool, this is my favourite part as I didn't see any graphics. But the sprites look cool. For me in program nothing works and the console reads:-

Game Graphics Mechanics
The game loaded fine for me. But the collision seemed way off. I was a full characters width away from things and still colliding with them. I was able to climb the ladder while not even touching it. Also the movement on ladders should be slowed a lot. It feels more like an elevator. You just slide up and down nearly instantly.

Game Graphics
I don't have a PC so I'm just going by the video and the screenshots. I think the jump noise is pretty annoying, especially when the user presses it multiple times in a row. You could change it to something else or maybe make it quieter.

I think the particle trail behind the character is pointless, it looks like a sparkly tail. Otherwise, I really like your pixel-art.

The parallax effect on the background is too fast. Parallax movement should be slower than the foreground movement.

Game Graphics Physics
I really enjoyed the pixel art of the game (the environment and background was beautiful) but the core gameplay needs a lot of work.

The physics of the game are really floaty and sluggish. It feels hard to make any sort of forward progress at the speed the king goes, and the jumps feel really light on the upwards bound and really heavy on the downwards. Combined with your limited ability to clear gaps, the platforming aspect of the game isn't really fun to play. I would recommend tuning the physics so that the king moves faster and jumps higher, and changing the rest of your planned level design to accomdate that.

Thanks for the feedback! I didn't explain the controls so you may not know of the sprint button (Shift). The sprinting button is a supposed to be a core mechanic in my game unlike games like Mario which it is mostly just optional. Thanks again!

The light texture on the player doesn't make a lot of sense. If the player holds a lantern, or something that emits light then the circular light texture would make sense!

You're right! The light is going to be attached to torches and fires at the end of the game, but I haven't made them yet so I attached it to the player.

Level Design
for a platformer what is foreground and what is background is very important, the fact that a ladder shows up in something that looks like instant death is a big problem.

Yea I know what you mean, but this is just a test level. When it is released this will not be in it, and no level will have the design flaws of this level.

Game Graphics Controls
I think this could be a good game, but there a few problems with it.

The controls feel very stiff. The player character takes way too long to get to full tempo and also takes too long to stop which means I'm always running into enemies because I couldn't stop in time. You also have almost no control in the air which makes it even more frustrating. The hitbox of the player is also way too large and it just feels unfair when you die.

I kind of like the music in the background, though I think it shouldn't start from the beginning every time you die.

I really do love the visuals of your game though which made me download the game in the first place. So again, if you fix some of the problems with the controls, this could be something cool.

Thanks! I've gotten a lot of reviews today saying pretty much exactly what you said. So the version that comes out next week will have very fast acceleration and deceleration as well as more frictions while jumping for more control. Thanks for the feedback and I'm always looking for ways to make this game the best it can be.

Game Graphics Controls
The control is a huge problem. Once the protagonist gets moving it takes too long to come to a stop or turn around. It seems even the enemies have better maneuverability than the player. The current max speed is fine, but the acceleration and friction need to be magnitudes higher.

That was pretty much the main problem. I think there are some issues with the level design (like having a snake camp the top of a ladder), but they might not turn out to be much of an issue once the controls are fixed. The graphics look nice, but the assets look familiar.

The assets may look familiar because they are CC0 assets from open game art. The controls are pretty bad in this update but I'm believe I have fixed it in my newer version. Also the design issues will not be issued once some of the main mechanics are implemented. (The character has the power to stop time to solve puzzles). Thanks for leaving feedback!

Physics Animation
Hello Mithreindir!
I've just tried your game. It's hard! But quite cool. However, there are some aspects that you should work on, which would make your game even better!
The controls are very cool, but sometimes, the enemies do some weird stuff (they go kill themselves...).
You should include HP for the character, because as for now, the game is quite unforgiving when he dies.
Music is good for now :)
The absence of UI could be good, but if you are to include HP, you should include some. And the player doesn't know how many coins he has gathered.
I'm looking forward to playing an updated version of the game :)
And if you were to make some animations for your game, that would be awesome.

I'm a little confused. The game is already animated, what do u mean make some animations? Right now the game is unforgiving, but this is because the main character will be able to freeze time in future versions (one of the main mechanics of this game). There will be a UI eventually, but I haven't gotten around to it. The enemies commiting suicide is intentional, they will be used to get around things. For example, there may be a cliff too high for you too jump and an enemy at the top. So the enemy jumps off and you freeze time when it is halfway down and use it to bounce into the big cliff. Thanks so much for the feedback, I'm always looking forward to make this game better!

Game Graphics Controls
Nice art work, the game needs a lot of feedback to the user whose playing it!

At the beginning, I killed the yellow enemy, I got stuck in the air and needed to exit the game and start again.
Improve the colliders, you can climb the ladder without touching it! haha

Animation Level Design
I liked the old school feeling of the game, but I was wondering what kind of "modern graphic techniques" you used. I would have liked to see a few more frames of animation in the sprites.

The level design seems a little flat. I would check out "How to Design Levels With the 'Super Mario World Method'" by Patrick Holleman http://gamedevelopment.tutsplus.com/articles/how-to-design-levels-with-the-super-mario-world-method--cms-25177

That post was really helpful when I was creating my own levels. :)

Overall, it looks pretty good. Keep up the good work.
