Ok so, the game was fun.
Bad/good news - there's lots of room for improvement.
You are able to improve the game in many ways:
- Graphics (you could improve any/every sprite if you wanted to)
- Animation of the cubes
- Music
- Programming
Good news - I'm willing to help you make some better sprites, by sending you some edits of your own sprites. What I'll need is: the sprites of all the cubes, to edit the main image then animate them.If you want I can also provide you with a similar but much more aesthetic wall, and perhaps a better flag too.
When I say programming I mean you need to fix the fact that you can't move in the 4 diagonal directions (up-left, up-right, down-left, down-right).
If you show me your code/DnD I can help you.
Key: + = positive, - = negative
+ Fun energizing music
- Repetitive music
+ Vines and rose in the background
- Rest of the background
+ Main character
- Single/first jump animation
+ Double/second jump animation
- Spikes at bottom don't look right
- Falling spikes
- Early levels too difficult
- I also feel like I'm skating on ice when I move
My recommendations to improve your game:
o Re-do the sprites/animations I have listed as negatives
o Make early levels really easy, progress the difficulty slowly. (e.g. slow down moving
platforms in level 2)
Played your game a couple of times, the further-est I got to was past the first gate. It was reasonably fun, mostly because of the great art and level design. These were positive aspects of the game.
The biggest letdown in your game is not the controls, it's actually the music. Improve the music and the game will be even better imo.
Also, I have heard some comments about some people not liking the art in this game, I completely disagree.
Poor collision 'mask' used for the main character.
Movement of the main character is very abrupt and not at all smooth
--> Poor coding for the movement
e.g. holding left then pressing up is fine
however, pressing up then left/right brings you back down immediately instead of continuing your jump's motion.
The gamplay is very limited and the mechanics are bad, also there's only one level so I can't say this is much of a game. Also there's no music or sound effects.
Still this game has a bit of potential because:
+ Graphic's are really nice
+ I like the main character, the enemy character, the cactus and grass, the icy platform, the direction signpost and the switch.
I agree with a lot of what "AtWorkOnProject" has said.
The level design and level variation is poor.
The graphics aren't that game either.
Yes the game needs some music, otherwise it's far too boring.
Yes the game also needs animation.
Needs animation e.g. if octopus lands it should bend down - this is optional.
If you want to improve your game you can simply improve any/many/all aspects of the game.
Ok so I'm suprised this hasn't had any responses yet because it's one of the better games on these forums considering it's the good visual.
All of the visual is great and goes well together, especially: the main character, platform and background.
I found there wasn't much to do in the game other than refill your red timer and pick up scrap.
Still I think you should continue this game! Best of luck with this project!
I played the tutorial first. Then I played story mode up to quarters of the damned.
Pros:
- Appropriate difficulty
- Random level generation
- General level design/layout
- Graphics are simple but well drawn and consistent/matching
- Graphic - animation of spells
- Gameplay concept: turn-based strategy game
- Tutorial
- Story makes game more interesting
All these aspects incline me to play the game
Cons:
- Music
- No sound effects
- No ability to skip player's turn
Despite there being many pros, the cons weigh heavily.
This game is fun but I would be inclined to play it longer if you added some better music (that also better matched the atmosphere) and sound effects.
Lots of Potential keep going!
Pros:
+ Simple but nice graphics.
+ Accessibility of the game.
+ Sound effects
+ Controls
+ Guide
Cons:
- Difficulty: enemies move too quickly making it too easy for you to die.
- Collision masks/hit-boxes are too big in general.
- Music
- Length of demo (though I assume this will increase)
- Name of the game (imo)
Advice:
o Make the collision masks/hit-boxes smaller
o Slow down the enemies
o Make/use better music
o Make the game bigger
Great game with lots of potential.
Pros:
+ Graphics (especially the: background, virus, scanner-light, lightning)
+ Gameplay concept the idea of dodging things
+ Warp mechanic
+ Controls
Cons:
- Music could be better
- Level design because some spaces on early levels are really slim and hard to get through
- Difficulty too high on early levels
