Spread

Hi guys, this is the demo for Spread, a 2D horror puzzle platformer.

You play as a little girl who has the power to control the growth of vines, and you use it to solve puzzles and explore a run-down hotel.

The game is still under development, but I wanted to put out a demo to see what people think. Any and all feedback, criticism and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!    I'm particularly interested in your thoughts on the interaction with the vines! I really love the theme of vines but I'm not sure about the mechanics.    Please tell me what you think in the comments, or contact me via following channels! Thank you :)   Backstory The little girl Vines has long been troubled by a strange disease. After exchanging letters with a mysterious physician, Vines' mother decided to take her to this half-abandoned town to find a cure for her disease.    To the west of town, at the foot of the mountains, a couple of crumbling buildings stand by the river. One of them is the StoneVein Spa Resort, once a famous rehabilitation facility but now lack of care. When Vines woke up in their room, she found her mom missing, and the hotel filled with secrets and lurking monsters...

Game Graphics Tutorial/Learning Curve
Game has a nice atmosphere and I like the vines mechanic. It's original.

I got stuck in the room with the headless statue and a message about a hairpiece missing. If there's a way to look at my inventory I have no idea what it is, nor does there seem to be a way to backtrack. I tried everything I could think of doing in that room, like swinging on the gem ropes etc before eventually giving up.

I think the first enemy should be a little more lenient. I died on it 10 times. Even when I got to the next room I still died on it. There was one wordless tutorial window that came up, the meaning of which I couldn't understand.

Other than that, obviously any game with serious platforming (well I didn't get far enough to know IF there is serious platforming) ought to have gamepad/joystick support.

Good luck. It's most of the way to being a great game but needs more testing so hopefully you get more playtesters here.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm hoping to release another demo in a month's time. In the next demo there will be an inventory and more story background. We are replacing the enemy as well because it was buggy and sometimes too difficult. For now we're only doing keyboard control but joystick support will certainly be something to consider for the future! Thanks again for taking the time to try out the game! Game Graphics Mechanics
This game has a very interesting premise, and surely has potential. The graphics are very nice and stylish, but all the animation could be improved: imho they are too stiff and not very dynamic. And while the graphic is nice, sometimes can be a little difficult to separate background and foreground objects.

There is some bugfix and proofread to be done on menus and texts: pause overlay has a typo - "RETUED" and the fifth page of "Diary of Hotel worker" seems missing a translation.

I also think there are some weird inconsistencies in falling damage: falling in the second section is lethal, even if the section before was taller. Even if it lands on the soft armchair, its quite weird.

I found a little bug: starting a new game WITHOUT restarting the application makes me start with all the documents I found on the previous run.

A nice to have would be that the vines created to be used as ladders do not vanish after a very little time. This behaviour killed the character a couple of time whne she almost reached the top.

Finally, I liked the lockpick minigame, I hope more like it are going to be inside the finished product.

I got stuck on room with mom's hand. Did I finish the demo?

Keep it up!
